Call for Hmong Dancers and Choreographers
Monday, November 12, 2018
I am a PhD student in Critical Dance Studies with a Designated Emphasis in Southeast Asian Studies researching dance and embodied practices of the Hmong Diaspora in the U.S. I am interested in interviewing Hmong dancers and choreographers who engage in "Hmong Dance" at Hmong New Year dance competitions for a current research paper that may grow into a larger work. I am not able to compensate at the moment but acknowledge and am appreciative of the time and insights offered in making this research possible. For serious inquiries, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. You may share this call to others who may be interested. Thank you.
Directed, edited, and written by Magnolia Yang Sao Yia
Filmed by Prakshi Malik
Thank you Professor Erika Lee and the Immigration History Center at the University of Minnesota for Immigrant Stories, a "digital storytelling project" and archiving platform that has offered Hmong Dance to be explored and accessed through film.
Thank you Prakshi Malik, Rachmi Diyah Larasati, Ananya Chatterjea, Hui Wilcox, Ananya Dance Theatre, Teresa Toguchi Swartz, and Darren Johnson for your contributions to this film and helping me develop my initial research of Hmong Dance.
